英國首相約翰遜月前患上肺炎瘟疫，上電視告訴國民：I've developed mild symptoms of the coronavirus…Be in no doubt that I can continue to lead the national fight back against coronavirus（我有冠狀病毒病的輕微徵狀……請勿疑慮，我可以繼續領導國家把冠狀病毒擊退）。有朋友覺得奇怪：virus（病毒）一字，不是應冠以a或the的嗎，怎麼約翰遜說coronavirus，時而冠以the，時而不冠以the？
按virus固然是「病毒」，但也可以指病毒引起的疾病。目前的冠狀病毒病，英文叫coronavirus disease，但隨便一點，可略去disease一字。韋氏（Merriam Webster's）網上詞典給coronavirus的一個解釋就是：all illness caused by a coronavirus, especially COVID-19（冠狀病毒引起的一種疾病，特指二零一九年冠狀病毒）。所以，英文大可以說：The coronavirus is a disease whose symptoms involve a temperature and a persistent cough（Coronavirus是一種疾病，病徵包括發燒及持續咳嗽）。
而由於這種肺炎疫病前所未有，要不要冠以the字，無先例可援。目前有人用the，有人不用，但用者似乎較多，將來也許會趨於一致。不過，有些由病毒引起的傳染病，如flu（感冒）、measles（麻疹）、mumps（腮腺炎）、chicken pox（水痘）等，說時既可冠以the，也可不用，例如：I came down with （the）flu the other day（我日前患感冒）。Coronavirus會不會也是如此，日後才能知道。
