Franklin Roosevelt, president of the United States from 1933 to 1945, once took a call in the White House from a person who identified himself as Pershing. Knowing that John Pershing, the World War I general, had recently died, Roosevelt replied impishly, "There is no one in, but this is Jesus Christ and I'll leave word you called." It turned out to be Warren Pershing, the general's son.

During World War II, Mrs Roosevelt went to visit a Baltimore prison. She left the White House very early that morning without informing her husband.
On his way to the office that day, Roosevelt called to his wife's secretary and asked where Eleanor was. "She is in prison, Mr President," said the secretary. "I'm not surprised," said Roosevelt, "but what for?"
