That he might prove whether his condemnation was not an account of the prejudice of the critics, Boyer gave it to be understood that the new tragedy was the production of a young man lately arrived at Paris(為了證明所受批評無關劇評者的偏見,布瓦耶傳言說,新撰悲劇的作者,是初到巴黎的一位年輕人)。 又gave it to be understood譯做「傳言」有沒有錯?
(1)(In order) That everyone in the hall would be able to hear, he used the loudspeaker / He used the loudspeaker(in order) that everyone in the hall would be able to hear(為求會堂之內所有人都聽得清楚,他用了擴音器)。(2)(In order) That others might live, he died / He died (in order) that others might live(他所以死,是為求他人活下去)。這個that的用法,沒有in order that那麼常見,難怪讀者疑惑。
至於to give a person to understand,是「告訴某人」、「令某人知道」的意思,例如:He was given to understand that the Hong Kong Chief Executive election was just a sham(他聽人說,香港行政長官選舉,只是一場假選舉)。Boyer gave it to be understood就是「布瓦耶(用文字、言語、暗示等)使人知道」。
