During World War II, Lord Mancroft's* duties in the War Office included visiting the prime minister's residence, 10 Downing Street, and putting the latest information on Churchill's war maps.
One day Mancroft was busy doing this while Churchill was out, with the maps spread out on the floor of the Cabinet Room, his hat upturned beside him, and colour chalks in his hand. Churchill unexpectedly appeared. Seeing the engrossed figure on the floor, Churchill reached into his pocket and without saying a word tossed a penny in Mancroft's hat.

*曼克羅夫特生於一九一四年，戰時任英軍中校，曾獲英勇十字勳章，戰後亦曾於邱吉爾政府內任職，一九八七年去世。
