In 1197, in a battle in Normandy, Pierre de Dreux, bishop of Beauvais and cousin-german to the king of France, was taken in arms by Richard I of England. Richard hated that martial prelate, and loaded him with irons. The bishop applied to the pope for redress, and the pope wrote to Richard a gentle remonstrating letter in favour of the prelate.
Richard answered by sending the bishop's coat of mail, which was besmeared with blood, to Rome, with these words from the Holy Bible: "Know now whether it be thy son's coat or not."* This answer put a stop to the pope's intercession, and he replied that the coat did not belong to a son of the church, but to a son of the camp. The prelate, thus abandoned, had to purchase his liberty at the price of 10,000 marks.
