問:貴欄日前有以下一句:What our staff lack are innovation and creativity(我們公司的職員,缺乏革故鼎新的才能)。這一句的主詞(subject)是what,動詞即使帶出的是兩種能力,是不是也應配主詞what,即are改為is?
答:這一句的are沒有錯,但用is也可以。What這個代名詞,作主詞的時候,動詞假如帶出複數名詞,那動詞有人認為仍應用單數形式,但也有人認為應用複數。所以,韋氏英文用法詞典 Webster's Dictionary of English Usage 指出,兩個寫法都有人用:Mixed usage occurs ... when the complement of the verb of the main sentence is plural。韋氏詞典還引述一個統計,值得參考:The plural verb (is) favoured by about three to one over the singular(用複數而不用單數動詞者,約為三比一)。
問:今年公眾假期有一天叫「中國人民抗日戰爭勝利七十週年紀念日」,英文是70th anniversary day of the victory of the Chinese people's war of resistance against Japanese aggression。「抗戰」真要譯做war of resistance嗎?
答:抗日戰爭,英文一般稱為the second Sino-Japanese War(第二次中日戰爭),中共官方稱為the Chinese people's war of resistance against Japanese aggression,十分累贅。而不說China's war卻說the Chinese people's war,當然有政治含義,有心否定國民黨領導戰爭,卻說「中國人民作戰」。我會把這紀念日改譯如下:70th anniversary (day) of China's victory against Japanese aggression。
