問：Amiable、amicable、affable三字，都可譯作「友善」，這三個「友善」有什麼分別？
答：Amiable和amicable是拉丁文 amicabilis （友善）一字的孿生字（doublet）。這兩個字意思差不多，但amiable多用來說人和藹可親，樂於助人，而amicable則較着重平和、不好爭鬥，例如：（1）Our boss is an amiable man（我們的老闆是個很和藹的人）。（2）The negotiations resulted in an amicable solution to the conflict（談判的結果，是糾紛得以和好的解決）。第七版《牛津高階英漢雙解詞典》的例句，也符合上述兩字的分別：（1）Her parents seemed very amiable（她父母似乎十分和藹可親）。（2）An amicable settlement was reached（事情終於協議和解）。
至於affable，和amiable一樣，也是「和藹可親」的意思，但affable所說的和藹友善，較為被動，例如：The affable manner of the shop assistant endeared him to even the most difficult customers（那店員十分和氣，即使最麻煩的顧客，都喜歡他）。
問：麵包有多種，那一種叫bread，那一種叫bun？
答：Bread是麵包的總稱，bun則是一種圓形小麵包，多是甜的。假如上有一層糖霜（icing），則叫做iced bun。Bread一般作不可數名詞（uncountable noun），但要說不同種類的麵包，則也可用複數形式，例如：Breads such as muffins and buns are very popular（鬆餅、甜圓包等麵包，很受歡迎）。
