問：《聖經．詩篇》第四十二章第五節中文版說：「我的心哪，你為何憂悶？為何在我裏面煩躁？應當仰望神，因他笑臉幫助我；我還是稱讚他。」看《聖經》英文版，卻不見「笑臉」的說法，中文翻譯是否有錯？
答：查英文《聖經》改譯標準本（Revised Standard Version），這一節是Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you disquieted within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my help and my God。沒有一字提到「笑臉」。
再查英文《聖經》御用本（King James Version），這一節是Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted in me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him for the help of his countenance。句末countenance一字，應該就是所謂「笑臉」的來源。
但countenance這裏不應解作「臉」，更不應解作「笑臉」。《牛津簡明英漢雙解詞典》countenance條下除了「the face面孔」這個注釋，還有另一個：「moral support（道義上的）支持」。御用《聖經》那一句，countenance明顯是指moral support；而由於the help of his countenance中的help和countenance意思差不多，改譯標準本就改譯為my help and my God。英文翻譯《聖經》，不拘泥原文，所以不少都文字優美；中文翻譯《聖經》，「為何在我裏面煩躁」之類硬譯充斥，所以文字往往不堪入目。現謹把讀者示下那一節改譯如後：「我的內心，為何沮喪，為何不安？且把希望寄於上帝。我要再一次歌頌上帝的庇佑。」
