答：So that常用來說「以便」或「使能夠」，其後多用may、can等帶出動詞，例如：（1）Come early so that we may start early（早點來，這樣我們就可以早點出發）。（2）We staggered our working hours so that the enquiry office was manned 24 hours a day（為使詢問處整天二十四小時都有人當值，我們安排在不同時間上下班）。讀者示下那一句的so that，當然不是上述意思。
不過，so that還可解作「因此」或「所以」，用法和so或and so相同，例如：（1）She woke up crying from a bad dream, so that / so / and so her husband took her in his arms to comfort her（她從惡夢之中哭着醒來，她丈夫於是抱着她，以示安慰）。（2）The gravestones were covered with moss, so that it was impossible to read the names on them（墓碑上長滿青苔，因此看不到碑上的名字）。例句二錄自《朗文當代高級英漢雙解詞典》so字條，句中so that二字改為and so或so也可以。讀者說的那一句，以so that說「因此」，當然沒有錯，但把that字刪去，句子也正確。
