問：學校領袖生（prefect）由右肩至左腰斜掛胸前的長布帶，英文叫什麼？
答：那樣的布帶，英文叫sash。第五版《朗文當代高級英漢雙解詞典》sash條下，有兩個解釋，一是「腰帶」，一是「（斜掛在肩上的）綬帶，肩帶a long piece of cloth that you wear over one shoulder and across your chest」。佩戴sash的當然不限於學校領袖生，例如：(1)The two girls wore sashes that identified them as Miss Hong Kong and Miss Macao（那兩個女郎胸前的斜帶，說明一個是香港小姐，一個是澳門小姐）。(2)The sashes school prefects wear are status symbols（學校領袖生胸前的斜帶，是身分象徵）。
這裏不妨附帶一提的，是警察、士兵等由肩至腰斜掛的皮帶，用以攜槍、劍等，一般叫baldric，不叫sash，例如：The policeman pulled a pistol from his baldric and pointed it at the protester's head（那警察從佩帶拔出手槍，指着抗議者的頭顱）。
問：Etc（等等）之前，是不是必須加逗點？查字典，或有逗點，或沒有。
答：《朗文英語用法指南》（ Longman Guide to English Usage ）et cetera條下注釋說：Put a comma before "etc" unless only one item has been mentioned。換言之，etc之前應加逗點，但假如etc之前列舉的只有一人、一事物等，則不用逗點，例如cats, dogs, etc（貓、狗等動物）、cats etc（貓等動物）。不過，也有人主張etc之前一律不用逗點。這主張較少人採納，不多說了。
