問：貴欄日前有以下一句：This is the terror, the silence of the Father, to which Jesus has committed himself, this is why he cried the cry of abandonment（這呼天父不應的恐怖，耶穌承受了；這也是他高喊被離棄的原因）。句子this is why之前，為什麼不用and？
答：根據今天的文法，句子假如有不止一個子句（clause），最後的子句不可用逗點帶出，逗點之後須有and、or等連接詞，否則算是犯了「逗點連接」（comma splice）的錯誤，例如英國十八世紀名作家Jonathan Swift諷世作品 Polite Conversation 有以下一句：Why, sure Betty, thou art bewitcht, this cream is burnt too（啊，蓓蒂，你一定是着了什麼魔，這乳酪也燒焦了）。這一句的this之前，今人或會加連接詞for、since或because，或會用分號（semicolon）或冒號（colon）取代那逗點。
不過，即使是現代英語，較短以及結構相似的子句，有時也會用逗點連接，而不用連接詞。英國二十世紀作家Leon Garfield的莎士比亞故事集 Shakespeare Stories 講《仲夏夜之夢》（ A Midsummer Night's Dream ），說到小精靈Puck : He was here, he was there, he was in front, he was behind, he was everywhere, he was nowhere（他忽而在此，忽而在彼，忽而在前，忽而在後，似是無所不在，又似是一無所在）。這就是逗點連接的例子，沒有用連接詞。拙欄所述那一句也是用這種寫法，只是兩子句稍為長一點而已。
