問：Relation、relationship二字，用法相同嗎？
答：這兩個字，都可以指「關係」。單數形式的relation，是指事物之間的關係；而複數形式的relations，則指人、國家等之間的關係，例如：（1）Is there any relation / relationship between chronic depression and poverty?（長期抑鬱和貧窮有關係嗎？）（2）The relations / relationship between the two countries became strained（兩國關係變得緊張）。可見relation (s)和relationship二字往往通用。
不過，要說某種特殊的血親或姻親關係，或不同事物相似之處，一般會用relationship，例如：（1）What relationship is he to the patient?（他和那病人是什麼關係？）（2）The relationship between poetry and music makes an interesting topic for study（詩歌和音樂相通的關係，很值得研究）。第一句的relationship不可改為relation或relations，第二句用relationship也勝於用relation。
留意成語to bear no relation to指「和……無關」或「和……不相稱」，那no改為little、some等也可以，但意思當然不同；至於那relation，則不可改為relationship，例如：The reward bore no relation to his efforts（報酬跟他的努力毫不相稱）。
