問：今年施政報告說：We have decided to lift the development moratorium at the south of Pok Fu Lam（政府決定放寬薄扶林南面的發展限制）。但一月中旬發展局長談到同一件事，說的却是uplift the administrative moratorium on development。Lift和uplift兩個動詞，那一個正確？
答：Moratorium是「暫停」或「暫時的禁令」，其後可用on帶出所禁的事物，例如：The international summit agreed on a moratorium on the testing of nuclear weapons（國際領袖會議議定暫停核子武器試驗）。而說「解除（禁令等）」，英文會用lift一字，不用uplift，例如：The government lifted the ban on firecrackers（政府解除對爆竹的禁令）。「解除發展限制」當然也應說to lift the development moratorium，不說uplift。
Uplift一字，多用於比喻，指「振起（精神、道德等）」，例如：His poems uplift the mind（他的詩篇，使人懷抱遠大高尚）。
問：要翻譯「施比受更有福」，以下那一句較好？──（1）It is more blessed to give than to receive。（2）The blessing of giving is greater than that of receiving。
答：第一句是改譯標準本（Revised Standard Version）《聖經．使徒行傳》第二十章聖保羅所述耶穌的話，當然比第二句好。「施比受更有福」只是It is more blessed一語的劣譯，那「更」字應該刪去。而全句我會改譯如下：「積福之道，受惠不如施惠。」
