問：The licence will expire on 31 January（牌照將於一月三十一日期滿）這一句所說牌照，一月三十一日有沒有效？
答：Expire是「期滿」；牌照將於某一天expire，那一天就不能再用。這正如mature（到期）一字，債券、存款等於某一天mature，那一天就應本利歸還，例如：（1）When your fixed deposit matures on 11 September, you will get your original investment back together with the interest earned（你的定期存款九月十一日到期，當天就可取回本金以及所得利息）。（2）As your driving licence expires on 22 July, you must get it renewed by them（你的駕駛執照七月二十二日到期，那天之前就須續期）。
問：要說「兩班學生人數的增長相同」，以下哪一句較好？（1）The two classes have the same number of growth in students。（2）The two classes have the same growth in the number of students。
答：英文不會說number of growth，只會說rate of growth（增長率），所以第一句文法不正確。第二句文法沒有問題，但我會改用另一說法：The student growth rates are the same for the two classes。說兩班學生人數「增長率」相同，意思會清楚一點。
