問：The contractor will catch up with the delay very soon（承辦商趕工，很快就會補回失去的時間）、The contractor is required to catch up（承辦商須照指示趕上）這兩句，正不正確？查《牛津高階英漢雙解詞典》，你可以catch up with somebody（趕上某人），卻不見catch up可以不帶受詞（object），也不見catch up with something（趕上某事物）這樣的說法。
答：Catch up這動詞片語（phrasal verb），可以沒有受詞；而catch up with something也是正確說法。例如：（1）If you miss a lot of classes, it's very difficult to catch up（假如你缺課太多，就很難趕上）。（2）We can't hope to catch up that car in front of us（我們不可能趕上前面那輛汽車）。這兩句一見《朗文當代高級英漢雙解詞典》，一見麥美倫出版社英文動詞成語詞典 English Verbal Idioms 。第二句to catch up that car改為to catch up with that car也可以。
不過，to catch up with the delay這說法，意思上說不過去。你可以趕上一個人、一件事物等，卻不可能「趕上耽誤」。要說「承辦商趕工，很快就會補回失去的時間」，英文可以這樣寫：The contractor will soon be able to make up for lost time。To make up for lost time也是成語，意思是「努力工作補回時間」。
