答：一般而言，假如《泰晤士報》那位記者認為教皇很可能成行，會說If he does, he will be ...；假如認為不大可能成行，會說If he did, he would be ...。現在那位記者旣說If he does，又說he would be，十分奇怪，他自己之外，恐怕沒有人能夠斷言為什麼這樣寫。我只能想到兩個可能的解釋。
一是If he does表示記者認為教皇可能成行，而he would be等等，則是繼續轉述帕特里洛神父的話，所以用過去式動詞。換言之，句子全寫可作：If the Pope does come, the priest said that he would be highlighting a national scandal。
另一解釋，是全句都是記者自己的想法，而不是轉述帕特里洛神父的話。那麼，If he does表示記者認為教皇可能成行，而假設語氣的would，表示教皇其實無意突出意大利那個醜聞，是從教皇的觀點述事。
無論如何，《泰晤士報》這一句絕對不是常規寫法，不宜仿效。
