In August 1942, Allied forces landed on Guadalcanal＊, a main Japanese base. Bitter fighting raged for several months.
American corporal George Menegus said, "There is bitter hatred on both sides." One day, while on patrol on Guadalcanal, he heard a noise coming from a tree behind him. He turned quickly and saw a Japanese sniper looking right at him. Figuring he would soon become a target, Menegus shot the sniper three times before he fell out of the tree. He said, "They tell you not to look at someone you have killed to avoid the onset of guilt feelings. I looked into that dead Jap's eyes and whispered, 'I got you, you son of a bitch, before you got me.'"
一九四二年八月，盟軍登陸瓜達爾卡納爾島＊。那是日軍一個重要基地。兩軍激戰了幾個月。
