American cartoon characters played a part in World War Ⅱ. Even Tarzan was conscripted to fight invading Nazis in the jungle. No cartoon character did more to humble the nation's enemies than Captain America. The superhero made his debut in a magazine of the same name in March 1941, before the United States entered the war. The cover of the first issue showed the shield-bearing warrior punching Hitler on the jaw. For the next eight years he fought tirelessly against Nazis and Japanese.
And he was not alone in the struggle. Superman and Batman had first seen the light of day in the late 1930s, and their popularity received a boost from 1942, when the villains they fought became the nation's enemies in war.
