On 29 March 1945, American forces landed on Negros Island in the Philippines. A Japanese soldier on the island gave the following account.
After the fierce bombardment from air and land, the enemy infantry approached and threw hand grenades in close combat. One after another my war buddies were killed. We were left with many heavily wounded soldiers. Maggots hatched in our bandages, writhing on our flesh and exuding a foul stench.
Food supplies were cut off. Having eaten up all the stalks of grasses and plants, and all the insects and reptiles; we became malnutrition cases. Hunger gnawed at people's spirit. Some seriously wounded and ill soldiers despaired so much that they killed themselves. Some attacked the supply base, fighting against other Japanese soldiers to obtain food.
一九四五年三月二十九日，美軍登陸菲律賓內格羅斯島。島上一名日軍有以下記述。
猛烈的陸空轟炸之後，敵軍步兵衝前，近距離作戰，向我們扔手榴彈。我的同袍相繼陣亡，我們的將士不少身受重傷。蛆蟲在我們的繃帶裏孕育，在我們肌肉上蠕動，發出惡臭。
糧食供應截斷了，我們把野草、植物、昆蟲、爬蟲等吃光之後，只能挨餓。飢餓削弱意志。一些傷重或病重的將士，絕望之餘，自了殘生。有些士兵則襲擊補給基地，為了爭奪食物，和其他日本士兵打起來。
