悲慘的人們，在《孤星淚》中不能逃避6月起義被鎮壓的厄運，但尚萬強仍救出跟貴族家族決裂的革命學生馬留斯（Marius Pontmercy），成全珂賽特跟愛郎結合。尚萬強最後老死時，傅安婷和主教的靈魂出現，帶他和6月起義死難者的靈魂上天堂，帶出人們肯集體發聲反抗，又或將肯愛和美德助人脫困，就有希望擺脫悲慘世界的信息。
雨果在《孤星淚》序言說：「只要這時代的三大問題：貧窮使男人沉淪，飢餓使女人墮落，黑暗使兒童羸弱還得不到解決……只要這個世界還存在愚昧和困苦，那麼這一類作品就不會是無用的。」《洛杉磯時報》更指片中其中一首歌《Do You Hear the People Sing》，可以做去年席捲全球的「佔領華爾街」運動主題曲。
