"Whensentencedtoexecutionbyafiringsquad,themanremainedaloof.Hepulledoutanoldpocketwatchandattemptedtohanditovertothecommandingofficerwithsomesortofrequest.Itwasrejected.Hedashedthewatchtotheground,breakingit.Hewasthentiedtoapillar,buttheprivatewhowastoshoothim,seeingthoseeyesflamingwithanger,faltered.Anofficerdashedup,andtookaimwithhisrifle.Oneshot.Twoshots.Themanfelllimp.

「一個年輕中國戰俘給拖進俘虜營。他一手牽着個三、四歲的男孩。那男孩哭着被拖開了。
「那戰俘被判處槍斃，仍然泰然自若。他拿出一個殘舊袋錶，想交給我們的司令官，提出一個要求，但遭拒絕。他把袋錶用力摔到地上，摔毀了。我們縛他在柱上，但負責槍斃他的士兵看到那雙眼睛的怒火，猶豫起來。一名軍官衝上前，舉起步槍瞄準。一槍。兩槍。那人全身軟了下來。
「我回到辦公室時，看見那男孩。他低聲問：『爹爹在哪裏？』」
