"Aloneelderlywomanrepeatedlyleanovertopickuppiecesofsomethingwithchopsticks.Sheputthepiecesonadish.Iapproachedherandaskedwhatshewasdoing.
"'I'velosteverything,'shereplied,'andnowmydaughterhasturnedintothis.IwanttohaveakeepsakeofmydaughtersothatIcanprayforhersoul.'Sosayingshecontinuedtopickupandplaceonthedishpiecesofbrainfromherdaughter'sburntskull.Thissceneofamother'sloveforherchildfullyimpressedonmethecrueltyofwar."
一九四五年七月十二日，日本福井縣敦賀市遭大規模空襲。第二天早上，一名通訊員走去視察市內通訊電線受到多少損毀。他寫下了以下見聞。
「一個孤獨的老婆婆不斷俯身向前，用筷子夾起一些東西，放在碟上。我上前問她在做什麼。
「她回答說：『我什麼都沒有了。現在，連女兒都變成這個樣子。我想保留女兒一點東西作紀念，以便為她的亡魂禱告。』那老婆婆一邊說，一邊繼續從女兒燒焦的腦殼裏，夾起一點點腦漿，放在碟子上。這母愛的表現，令我深深領略到戰爭的殘酷。」
