"Theprisonerswereblindfoldedandtiedtoapost.Acirclewasdrawninredchalkaroundtheareaoftheheartontheirclothes.Asthetrainingbegan,theinstructorbellowedout,'Ready?Theredcircleiswheretheheartis.That'stheonlyplaceyou'reprohibitedtostab.Understood?'Ihadthoughtthattheinstructorhadmarkedtheareatomakeiteasierforthenewrecruitstostabtheheart.Butthatwasmymisunderstanding.Itwastomaketheprisonerslastaslongaspossible.

一九四二年三月,山東一日本軍人看見五個中國戰俘給二十多名新兵作刺刀練習:
「戰俘被蒙上眼睛,綁在柱上,襟前用紅色粉筆繞着心臟畫了個圈。練習開始時,教官高聲說:『準備好了嗎?紅圈是心臟所在,是你們唯一不得刺的地方,明白嗎?』我原以為他畫出心臟位置,以便新兵辨認刀刺目標。但我誤會了。不刺心臟,是要教戰俘盡可能多捱一會。
「幾分鐘之後,刺耳的喊殺聲不斷響起。那幾個戰俘全身都是刺刀孔,在血泊之中,癱軟下來。」
