"Onenight,whenthedefenceswerethin,ourbarrackswasattackedbytheenemy,whodidnotretreattilldawn.Ataroundeighto'clock,SergeantA'spersonalinterpreter,aChinesesmallofstatureandroundofface,cametoworkasusual.SergeantAcalledhimtohisoffice.BindingChen'shandsbehindhisback,herepeatedlytorturedhim,insistingthatthepreviousnight'sattackwasduetoChen'spassinginformationtotheenemy.Chenwasthendraggedtotheopenspacenexttothebarracks.Hewashungupsidedown.Beneathhisheadsomewoodwaspiledandsetonfire.Astheflamesrose,Chen'sbodytwistedandhisarmsdanced.Thatlastedforabout30secondsbeforehefellmotionless."
一個日本士兵記述一九四一年他在天津的經歷，當時他的指揮官是中士甲：
「一天晚上，營房防衞薄弱，敵軍來襲，到黎明才撤退。八點鐘左右，中士甲的私人口譯員陳某照常上班：他是個矮小面圓的中國人。中士甲叫他到辦公室，把他雙手綁在背後，不斷施以酷刑，堅稱昨晚的襲擊，是他向敵人通風報信的結果。跟着，陳某給拖到營房旁邊的空地，倒吊起來，頭下堆起木塊，引火把木塊燒着，火焰上升，陳某身體扭動，兩手亂舞，過了約三十秒鐘，才靜止下來。」
