土耳其君主阿布杜勒．哈米德二世一九○九年被廢。他在位期間，殘暴非常，有一次，要聘請畫師畫一油畫，以施洗者約翰的頭顱＊盛在盤子上為題，並邀得英國最出色的人像畫家奧古斯塔斯．約翰作畫。
