Shortlythereafter,learningthathehaddeniedsuchadistinguishedvisitoraroom,themortifiedownersentseveralservantsouttofindJefferson,offeringhimasmanyroomsashewished.Theyfoundhimstayingatanearbyhotel,andrenderedtheapologeticmessagefromtheirboss.
"GiveMr.Boydenthefollowingmessage,"Jeffersontoldthem."Ivaluehisgoodintentionshighly,butifhehasnoroomforadirtyfarmer,heshallhavenonefortheVice-President."
湯瑪斯．傑佛遜＊一七九七至一八零一年任美國副總統，有一次塵垢滿衣，走到巴爾的摩市一家頗豪華的旅館投宿。旅館主人博伊登先生打量了他一下，說沒有空房了。
不久，他知道來者原來是個大人物，非常懊悔，派遣幾個僕人去找傑佛遜，說他要多少客房都可以。那幾個僕人發覺傑佛遜去了附近一家旅館下榻，就向他轉達老闆道歉的口信。
傑佛遜對他們說：「代我告訴博伊登先生吧：他的盛情，我十分感謝，但假如他沒有客房供骯髒的農夫下榻，副總統也不可能到他那裏下榻。」
