他們的隊長將近一百歲，而最年輕的一員，也差不多七十歲。各人身上都佩一塊黑紗，以示哀傷：哀傷桑榆之年，還不得不執槍作戰。這些老兵說：「這個國家慷慨給我們安身之地，使我們得免苛政，得免壓迫。假如我們不思報效，保衞這個國家，那就是忘恩負義。」
