On2October1918,NewYork'sfamed77thStatueofLibertyDivisioncommandedbyMajorCharlesWhittleseywascutoffbyGermanforcesintheArgonneForest.Athirdoftheforcebecamecasualtiesofanattackthenextday,andtherewasnofood.
On4October,amisguidedalliedartillerybarragehitWhittlesey'smen.Themajorwroteamessagepinpointingtheirpositionandpleading:"Forheaven'ssake,stopit."Hislastpigeonflewthroughenemyfiretodeliverit,andtwohourslatertheshellingstopped.
AlthoughWhittlesey'sforcewastooweaktoburyitsdead,whentheGermanssuggestedsurrender,Whittleseydidnotevenreply.Notuntilfiveharrowingdayshadpasseddidreliefgetthrough.Only194oftheoriginal550soldierssurvived.
