DuringWorldWarⅡ,privatepig-owningbecameapopularactivityintheUnitedKingdomasthemeatrationdwindled.Bythemiddleofthewar,itwasofficiallyestimatedthattherewere6,900pigclubsthroughoutthecountry,manyofthemrunbypolicemenandfiremen.Mostpigswererearedonallotmentsorinbackgardens,butsomehadmoreunlikelyhomes,suchasthedrainedswimmingpoolofabombed-outLondonclub.
AyoungwomanfromCatfordrecalledhowsheandsomefriendshadeachtakena5-shillingstakeinapigbeingfedattheirlocalfirestation:"HowwewatchedthosepigsandgladlypaidourmoneywhenitcameroundtoChristmasandweweregivenpermissiontokillthem.Idon'tthinkporkhastastedthesamesince."
第二次世界大戰期間，英國肉類配給漸減，私人養豬遂告流行。據官方估計，戰爭中期，全國有六千九百個養豬會，其中不少由警察和消防員經營。養豬場所，多是租來的公地或後花園，但也有些場所頗為出人意料，例如倫敦一個遭炸毀的俱樂部，其泳池排水之後，闢作養豬場。
一個少女憶述當時她在卡福特區，和朋友各投資五先令在一隻當地消防局飼養的豬身上：「我們懷着期待的心情，看着那些豬長大，到了聖誕節，獲許殺豬，就高高興興付錢。此後的豬肉，哪有這麼美味。」
