DuringWorldWarⅡ,privatepig-owningbecameapopularactivityintheUnitedKingdomasthemeatrationdwindled.Bythemiddleofthewar,itwasofficiallyestimatedthattherewere6,900pigclubsthroughoutthecountry,manyofthemrunbypolicemenandfiremen.Mostpigswererearedonallotmentsorinbackgardens,butsomehadmoreunlikelyhomes,suchasthedrainedswimmingpoolofabombed-outLondonclub.
AyoungwomanfromCatfordrecalledhowsheandsomefriendshadeachtakena5-shillingstakeinapigbeingfedattheirlocalfirestation:"HowwewatchedthosepigsandgladlypaidourmoneywhenitcameroundtoChristmasandweweregivenpermissiontokillthem.Idon'tthinkporkhastastedthesamesince."
第二次世界大戰期間,英國肉類配給漸減,私人養豬遂告流行。據官方估計,戰爭中期,全國有六千九百個養豬會,其中不少由警察和消防員經營。養豬場所,多是租來的公地或後花園,但也有些場所頗為出人意料,例如倫敦一個遭炸毀的俱樂部,其泳池排水之後,闢作養豬場。
一個少女憶述當時她在卡福特區,和朋友各投資五先令在一隻當地消防局飼養的豬身上:「我們懷着期待的心情,看着那些豬長大,到了聖誕節,獲許殺豬,就高高興興付錢。此後的豬肉,哪有這麼美味。」
