Daleattemptedtoblackmailtheplantfor$100,000.Hediditbysendingtheheadoftheplantasmallvialcontainingsomeofthenuclearmaterial,alongwithaletterexplainingthatifhewasnotpaidhewouldsendsimilarvialstoalltheanti-nucleargroupsinthecountry--amovethatwouldbesuretoshuttheplantdownforgood.However,insteadofpayingDalehishushmoney,theplantgotintouchwiththeauthorities.Dalewaseventuallyfoundoutandapprehended＊.
大衞．戴爾是北卡羅來納州威爾明頓市通用電氣公司發電廠合約雇員。一九七九年，他潛入禁區，用手推車運出兩桶各五加侖的低濃縮鈾，若無其事的放在車尾行李箱裏，開車離去。
戴爾要勒索發電廠十萬元，手段是給發電廠主管寄一小瓶偷到的核子原料，並附寄一封信，說假如不獲付款，就會寄同樣的一小瓶鈾給全國所有反核組織──這樣，發電廠非永遠關閉不可。但發電廠沒有付封嘴錢，卻通知有司。戴爾最後被找到並且逮捕。
