英國海盜愛德華．蒂奇又名黑鬍子，在英國的美洲殖民地東岸出沒，到了一七一八年，已是公認的全球最大膽、最成功海盜。維吉尼亞總督終於批准派遣一支小艦隊前去追捕，由羅勃特．梅納德上尉統領。
追捕的結果，是一場海盜和官兵之戰。黑鬍子一手持手槍，一手執海盜彎刀，和梅納德決鬥。兩人相向開槍，黑鬍子沒有命中，梅納德則打中黑鬍子。黑鬍子負傷，卻還能揮舞彎刀，把梅納德手中劍擊斷，正舉刀要取梅納德性命，一個士兵及時從他背後走上前，一劍割破他的咽喉。
