騎兵撤退時，一名軍官中槍死亡。北軍在他口袋裏找到文件，發覺這次突擊有另一個目的：格殺南部聯盟總統傑佛遜．戴維斯。北方政府否認一切，但南方人憤怒非常，密謀報復，擬定不少計劃，其一是綁架林肯總統。參與那計劃的有一個叫約翰．布斯的演員。那計劃未能成事，布斯就展開另一計劃：一八六五年，他的計劃成功了。
