In1855,EgyptiancamelswereimportedtoAmericaformilitarypurposes.In1863,theywereeitherauctionedorturnedlooseintothedesert.AmongthemwasacamelthatfirstappearedinArizonain1883,whenittrampledawomantodeath.
Soon,peoplebegantoreportseeingthecamel,andthesourceoftheanimal'sfearofpeoplewasdiscovered:Adeadriderwaslashedtoitsback.Forthenexttenyears,numerousothersspiedthecamel,whobythistimehadbeendubbedthe"RedGhost".In1893,afarmerfoundtheredcamelgrazinginhisgarden.Heshotandkilledtheanimal.Bythistime,thecamelhadshakenfreeofitsdeadrider,butstillborethesaddleandleatherstrapswithwhichtheriderhadbeenattached.Itisanybody'sguesswhotheriderwas.
一八五五年，美國輸入埃及駱駝，以供軍用。一八六三年，那些駱駝或拍賣掉，或釋放到沙漠，其中一隻一八八三年第一次在亞利桑那州出現，還把一個女人踩死蹄下。
不久，見到這隻駱駝的消息陸續傳出，而牠怕人的原因也發現了：駱駝背上綁着一個已死騎士。其後十年，很多人見過這駱駝，大家也給了牠一個名稱：紅幽靈。一八九三年，一個農場主人發現這隻紅駱駝在花園裏吃草，開槍把牠殺死。當時駱駝已經擺脫了那騎士的屍體，但身上還有鞍子，以及多年綁着騎士的皮帶。那騎士的身分沒有人知道。
