On24June1859,FrenchandItalianforcesunderNapoleonⅢattackedanAustrianarmy.ASwissbusinessman,HenryDunant,whowastryingtoarrangeameetingwithNapoleonⅢ,witnessedthebattle.Hewasshockedbythehorrifyingcarnage.Whatcamenextwasevenworse.Astaggering40,000wereleftwoundedonthefieldofbattleandmedicalcareforthemwastotallyinadequate.
Dunantthrewhimselfintotheefforttohelpthewounded.Herecalledonewoundedsoldierwhospokebitterlyofhisfate:"IfIhadbeenlookedaftersoonerImighthavelived,andnowbyeveningIshallbedead."Andhewas.
Movedbywhathehadseen,Dunantcalledfortheformationofaninternationalorganisationtoprovideaid.HisworkledtotheformationoftheRedCross.
一八五九年六月二十四日，法國和義大利軍隊在拿破崙三世指揮之下，向奧地利軍隊進攻。瑞士商人亨利．迪南當時正謀見拿破崙三世，目睹這場戰爭。那可怕的大屠殺，令他大為震驚。更糟的是，戰爭之後，戰場上遺下傷兵四萬，數目多得驚人，醫療照顧卻嚴重不足。
迪南盡力救助傷兵。他憶述一個傷兵對自己命運的慨歎：「假如我早點獲得照顧，可能還能活下去；但現在，我捱不到今晚。」他果然活不到那天晚上。
戰場所見，激起了迪南的熱忱。他呼籲成立一國際救助機構。紅十字會的成立，就是他努力的結果。
