Thenewsettlersremainedoptimistic.Butwithwinterapproachingandnotimeforplantingcrops,thecolonywassoonrunningoutofsupplies.WhitewaschosentoreturntoEnglandforhelp.HearrivedastheEnglishwererepellingtheSpanishArmadaandwasunabletoreturntoRoanoketill1591.Therewasnosignofthecolonistshehadleft.Andoverthecenturies,searchesforthelostcolonyhaveyieldednothing.
一五八七年仲夏，一百一十四個英國成年男女和孩子，由約翰．懷特率領，登陸北美羅阿諾克島。一年前，一支英軍進駐島上，但現在已不見蹤影，只見他們聚居地已經毀棄，還有一副人骨。此外找到的，是一個離開營地的死者，身上插滿了箭。
那群新移民沒有喪氣。但寒冬將臨，他們沒有時間耕種，補給不久就快耗盡，於是推舉懷特回國求援。懷特到達時，英國正力抗西班牙無敵艦隊。到了一五九一年，懷特才能返回羅阿諾克，但島上移民已經蹤影全無。幾百年來，尋覓這群失蹤移民下落，都是白費工夫。
