Sprintingpainfullyacrossthepricklybrush,ColterheadedfortheJeffersonRiver,somesixmilesaway.Heoutdistancedallbutonespear-carryingBlackfoot,whomhefinallyturnedtoface.Hekilledthepursuerwithhisownspear.ThenhedoveintothecoldJeffersonRiver,wherehehidunderapileoftimbers.Whennightfell,hedrifteddownstreamandmadegoodhisescape.
