一九四五年二月，盟軍轟炸機空襲德國城市德萊斯登。一名馴獸師駭然看着德萊斯登動物園在一輪轟炸之下火光熊熊。
「大象發出令人寒心的尖叫。一隻幼小雌象背卧地上，四腳朝天，腹部受了重創，不能動彈。猿屋裏，一隻長臂猿向馴獸師伸出血肉模糊的兩條斷臂。將近四十隻恒河猴逃到樹上，但捱不到第二天，就因喝了燃燒化學品污染的水而死亡。第二天，一個飛行員駕着美國飛機，低飛而至，看見還有生命的東西就開火。我們最後一隻長頸鹿於是遇害。不少雄鹿和其他動物，本來已由我們救起，都死在這位英雄手下。」
