"AmanwhowentouttoGallipoliwentmadonthebeach.Hesawthewholebeachcoveredwithjewelledspidersofenormoussize.Andasthebargescameupwiththewoundedhesawhiswifeandchildonabarge,cutinpieces."

「蒂埃里城堡戰役裏，一個士兵雙手捧頭，跑進我的急救站，高喊：『請幫幫我，我頭顱要爆炸了！』我們還未安頓他到牀上，他已經倒地死去，原因無疑是腦出血。這是真正的砲彈震駭症。」
「一個出征加利波利的軍人，在海灘上瘋了，看到整個海灘滿布鑲了寶石的巨蜘蛛。駁船載着傷兵到來時，他又看到其中一艘載着他妻子和孩子給人斬成碎片的屍體。」
