TheSovietPOWsweremalnourished,oftenconsumingonlyafewhundredcaloriesperday.AGermansoldiergivesanaccountofwhathappenedinaPOWcamp:"Behindthehutstherewasabigmidden,andifwedidnotlookouttheRussianPOWswouldpokeaboutinitandeatsuchthingsasdecayingonions.Ifoneofuscamenear,theywouldscatterlikedung-flies.Ioncefoundoneroastingdriedpig'sdung."
希特勒對蘇聯之戰，是一場種族戰爭：希特勒視俄國人為「低等人類」。所以，德軍手上的蘇聯戰俘，約五百七十萬人，死者達三百三十萬，佔百分之五十七；而他們手上的英美戰俘，共二十三萬一千人，死者則只有八千三百，佔百分之三點六。
蘇聯戰俘食不果腹，一天往往只有幾百卡路里食物。有德國士兵記述戰俘營情況：「木屋後面，是一大堆動物糞便。假如我們不留意，那些蘇聯戰俘就會走去挑撥，吃其中腐爛的洋葱等。我們一走近，他們就會像附糞蒼蠅般散開。有一次，我看見一人正把乾豬糞烤來吃。」
