DuringtheZuluWarof1879,fourthousandZulusattackedasmallBritishgarrisondefendingaSwedishmissionstation.Theyopenedfireonahospital,wherePrivateJohnWaterswasanorderly.Hegaveanaccountoftheincident.
"TheZuluscameinandsetfiretothehospital.Itookrefugeinacupboard,andastheyweregoingoutIkilledmanyofthem.AsIcouldnotstaytherelong,theplacebeingsosuffocating,IputonablackcloakIhadfoundinthecupboard,andranoutinthelonggrassandlaydown.TheZulusmusthavethoughtIwasoneoftheirdeadcomrades,astheywereallroundaboutme,andsometrodonme.Whenthebattlewasover,Igotup,andIsaid,'ThankGod,Ihavegotmylife.'"
一八七九年祖魯戰爭之中，守衞瑞典一個傳教站的一小隊英軍，遭四千祖魯人襲擊。祖魯人向醫院開火，守護醫院的二等兵約翰．沃特斯記下了當時情況。
「祖魯人走進醫院縱火。我躲到櫥櫃裏，乘他們退出去時，殺了他們多人。我不能在那裏久留，因為濃煙嗆人，就披上櫥櫃裏找到的黑色斗篷，跑到外面，伏在長長的草叢裏。我四周很多祖魯人屍體，那些祖魯人一定以為我也是他們戰死的族人，有些還踩在我身上。戰鬥結束後，我站起來，說了句：『謝天謝地，我這條命撿回來了。』」
