DuringtheMexicanWarof1846-8,someAmericansoldierswereenticedtodefecttotheMexicans,whoofferedtheAmericanprivates320acresoflandandmuchmorefornon-commissionedandcommissionedmen.IntheBattleofChurubusco,some60ofthedefectorswerecapturedandsentencedtodeath.ColonelWilliamHarneywasputinchargeofexecuting30ofthem.Whenonly29cameoutforexecution,Harneywasfuriousandwantedtoknowwherethemissingmanwas.
