美國獨立戰爭期間，英國用來囚禁戰俘的廢船成為疾病溫牀，戰俘須懂得自我照顧。這情況可見於以下記載：
「我從未患過天花，因此得種痘預防，就找到一個病情到了合適階段的患者，請他賜贈一點天花，他很爽快的答應了。我用一根普通大頭針，劃破拇指和食指之間的皮膚，塗上天花菌，然後把手包紮好。第二天早上，我發覺傷口已經開始化膿。我病情輕微，不久就復元了。」
＊Hulk指廢棄的舊船，長期停泊某地，供貯物用，從前還常用作囚室。留意一般船隻的船身叫hull，不可和hulk混淆。
