"Atorpedowasseenapproaching,andwemadesureithit.Whilethepanic-partyweregettingawayintheboats,thesubmarinewatchedusthroughherperiscope.Finally,shesurfacedandcameabreastoftheship,andthecaptaincameoutoftheconningtower.AtthismomentIgavetheordertoopenfire.Whatashockitmusthavebeenforthecaptain,suddenlytoseeourwheelhousecollapseandoursidesfalldowntosplutterforthMaximshots.Buthehadnotlongtothink,asthefirstshothithim.Thesubmarineneverhadachancetoescape."
第一次世界大戰期間，英國常用一些看似無攻擊力而暗藏重兵的商船，引誘德國潛艇浮出水面，一如以下記載。
「我們看見一枚魚雷打來，有心讓它命中，恐慌組人員乘小艇四散。那潛艇用潛望鏡觀察了一會，浮出水面，來到我們船側，和我們並排，船長走出瞭望塔。我馬上下令開火。那船長看見我們的駕駛室突然坍塌，船的邊板同時落下，吐出重機槍的連環火舌，一定深感驚怖。但他沒有時間多想，因為第一槍就打中他。那潛艇根本沒有機會逃脫。」
