第二次世界大戰將臨，不少人已經見霜知冰。英國著名板球評論員內維爾．卡達斯的一段記述，可以說明這一點：
「希特勒入侵波蘭那天，我在洛德板球場的長室裏。天上有防空的阻截氣球。球場上，球員在爭勝；觀眾席上，卻是寂靜無人。洛德的一名會員站在我附近看比賽。我們並不相識，當然沒有交談。兩名工人忽然走進長室，把格雷斯的半身像搬下來，放進袋子裏，提着離去。我身旁那位貴族望着工人的一舉一動，最後轉頭對我說：『看見嗎？那是戰爭的兆頭。』」
