LessthanacenturyafterCanute,WilliamⅡofEnglandsaidsomethingverydifferent.In1099,hehurriedacrossthechanneltotakepossessionofNormandy.Whenthepilotobjectedthattheweatherwas"toostormytoputout",Williamrepliedhaughtily:"Holdthepeace1,knave;kingsareneverdrowned."2
根據傳說，英王喀奴特曾向獻媚者證明自己權力有限，叫人把寶座搬到海濱。潮漲時，他坐在寶座上，高喊：「海水，我命令你不得再前進一步。」但潮水繼續上升。喀奴特於是說：「大家應該明白，國王的權力十分空虛。」
