一八一五年一月八日的新奧爾良戰役，是英、美一八一二年戰爭的最後一場大戰，其間英軍中校弗朗西斯．布魯克身受重傷，被肯塔基州一群草野之徒俘虜。
布魯克見這群人形容齷齪得可怕，問道：「你們軍中沒有正規軍官的嗎？我希望由有教養的人處理我。」
一名草野之徒覺得他可惡，提議說：「這雜種那麼自大，我們別管他，由他在自己血泊中打滾好了。」
他們的領袖說：「不行。他說話無禮，但大家不必介意。看他受傷分上，我們可以算他有教養。此外則當然不可以。」
