晚安。今晚，我可以向美國人以至全世界滙報，美國完成了追殺阿蓋德領袖拉登的任務。他是一名恐怖分子，是殺害數以千計無辜男女與小孩的主謀。
約十年前，一個晴朗的九月天，被美國歷史上最嚴重的遇襲塗灰了。911的影像烙印於我們的國家記憶──被騎劫的飛機割破萬里無雲的九月天空；世貿雙子塔倒地；黑煙從五角大廈升起；賓夕凡尼亞尚克斯維爾一架93號航機的殘骸，是英勇公民避免更多碎心與破壞的地方。
我們知道，最惡劣的情景並未公諸於世。晚餐桌上的空凳，被迫孤獨成長的孤兒，不能再跟孩子擁抱的父母，近三千公民的生命從我們手上被奪走，在我們心中留下一大破洞。
2001年9月11日，我們的悲傷一刻，美國人團結一致。我們向鄰居伸出援手，我們向傷者捐血。我們重建了互相之間的關係，重建對社區和國家的愛。在那天，不管我們從哪裏來，不管我們的信仰，不管我們的膚色與種族，我們都走在一起，成為一個美國家庭。
我們同時團結起來保護我們的國家，把那些策動邪惡攻擊的人繩之於法。我們瞬即查明911由阿蓋德策劃，這是拉登帶領的組織，它曾公開向美國宣戰，並已承認殺害我國以致全球的無辜者。為了保護我們的人民，我們的朋友以及盟友，我們向阿蓋德開戰。

一如以往，我們重申，美國並非─也永遠不是──跟伊斯蘭開戰。我已清楚說明，如同布殊總統911後所說，我們的戰爭並非針對伊斯蘭。拉登並非穆斯林領袖，他是個屠殺穆斯林的兇手。其實，阿蓋德在包括美國在內的多個國家殺了數十穆斯林。因此拉登之死應該是相信和平與人道尊嚴者所歡迎的。
過去多年，我重複闡明，要是知道拉登藏身巴基斯坦，我們會採取行動。我們言出必行。重要的是，我們與巴基斯坦的反恐合作把我們帶到拉登藏身之所。拉登其實也曾向巴基斯坦宣戰，並下令攻擊巴基斯坦人民。
今晚我曾致電扎爾達里，我的隊伍也曾與巴基斯坦夥伴對話。他們同意這是個歷史性的好日子，對美國與巴基斯坦都是。展望未來，重要的是，巴基斯坦繼續跟我們並肩打擊阿蓋德及其黨羽。

今晚，我們向無數孜孜不倦的情報人員和反恐專家致謝。美國人無法看見他們的工作，也不知道他們的名字。但今晚，他們會從自己的努力與追求公義的成果得到滿足感。
我們感謝執行今次行動的好漢，他們展示了專業、愛國和異常勇氣。他們來自九月那天以來，肩負着沉重壓力的一代。
最後，讓我向911失去至親的家庭說句話，我們永遠不會忘記你們的損失，也不會遽棄避免另一次襲擊我們國土的承諾。
今晚，讓我們回想911以來的團結意識，我知道有時會磨損。但今天的成就，是我國的偉大與美國人的決心的見證。
保衞我國的目標還未完成，但今晚，我們再次得知，美國人可以做到任何矢志要做的事。這是我們的歷史故事，不管是追求我們人民的富足，還是為全民平等而鬥爭；不管是承諾在海外為我們的價值而起來，還是為世界和平而犧牲。我們要記住，我們做得到，不是因為我們的財富與權勢，而是因為我們：一個國家，在主的帶領下，都享有自由與平等，永不分離。

Itwasnearly10yearsagothatabrightSeptemberdaywasdarkenedbytheworstattackontheAmericanpeopleinourhistory.Theimagesof9/11aresearedintoournationalmemory--hijackedplanescuttingthroughacloudlessSeptembersky;theTwinTowerscollapsingtotheground;blacksmokebillowingupfromthePentagon;thewreckageofFlight93inShanksville,Pennsylvania,wheretheactionsofheroiccitizenssavedevenmoreheartbreakanddestruction.
Andyetweknowthattheworstimagesarethosethatwereunseentotheworld.Theemptyseatatthedinnertable.Childrenwhowereforcedtogrowupwithouttheirmotherortheirfather.Parentswhowouldneverknowthefeelingoftheirchild'sembrace.Nearly3,000citizenstakenfromus,leavingagapingholeinourhearts.
OnSeptember11,2001,inourtimeofgrief,theAmericanpeoplecametogether.Weofferedourneighborsahand,andweofferedthewoundedourblood.Wereaffirmedourtiestoeachother,andourloveofcommunityandcountry.Onthatday,nomatterwherewecamefrom,whatGodweprayedto,orwhatraceorethnicitywewere,wewereunitedasoneAmericanfamily.
Wewerealsounitedinourresolvetoprotectournationandtobringthosewhocommittedthisviciousattacktojustice.Wequicklylearnedthatthe9/11attackswerecarriedoutbyAl-Qaeda--anorganizationheadedbyOsamabinLaden,whichhadopenlydeclaredwarontheUnitedStatesandwascommittedtokillinginnocentsinourcountryandaroundtheglobe.AndsowewenttowaragainstAl-Qaedatoprotectourcitizens,ourfriends,andourallies.
Overthelast10years,thankstothetirelessandheroicworkofourmilitaryandourcounterterrorismprofessionals,we'vemadegreatstridesinthateffort.We'vedisruptedterroristattacksandstrengthenedourhomelanddefense.InAfghanistan,weremovedtheTalibanovernment,whichhadgivenbinLadenandAl-Qaedasafehavenandsupport.Andaroundtheglobe,weworkedwithourfriendsandalliestocaptureorkillscoresofAl-Qaedaterrorists,includingseveralwhowereapartofthe9/11plot.
YetOsamabinLadenavoidedcaptureandescapedacrosstheAfghanborderintoPakistan.Meanwhile,Al-Qaedacontinuedtooperatefromalongthatborderandoperatethroughitsaffiliatesacrosstheworld.
Andsoshortlyaftertakingoffice,IdirectedLeonPanetta,thedirectoroftheCIA,tomakethekillingorcaptureofbinLadenthetoppriorityofourwaragainstAl-Qaeda,evenaswecontinuedourbroadereffortstodisrupt,dismantle,anddefeathisnetwork.
Then,lastAugust,afteryearsofpainstakingworkbyourintelligencecommunity,IwasbriefedonapossibleleadtobinLaden.Itwasfarfromcertain,andittookmanymonthstorunthisthreadtoground.ImetrepeatedlywithmynationalsecurityteamaswedevelopedmoreinformationaboutthepossibilitythatwehadlocatedbinLadenhidingwithinacompounddeepinsideofPakistan.Andfinally,lastweek,Ideterminedthatwehadenoughintelligencetotakeaction,andauthorizedanoperationtogetOsamabinLadenandbringhimtojustice.
Today,atmydirection,theUnitedStateslaunchedatargetedoperationagainstthatcompoundinAbbottabad,Pakistan.AsmallteamofAmericanscarriedouttheoperationwithextraordinarycourageandcapability.NoAmericanswereharmed.Theytookcaretoavoidciviliancasualties.Afterafirefight,theykilledOsamabinLadenandtookcustodyofhisbody.
Forovertwodecades,binLadenhasbeenAl-Qaeda'sleaderandsymbol,andhascontinuedtoplotattacksagainstourcountryandourfriendsandallies.ThedeathofbinLadenmarksthemostsignificantachievementtodateinournation'sefforttodefeatAl-Qaeda.
Yethisdeathdoesnotmarktheendofoureffort.There'snodoubtthatAl-Qaedawillcontinuetopursueattacksagainstus.Wemust--andwewill--remainvigilantathomeandabroad.
Aswedo,wemustalsoreaffirmthattheUnitedStatesisnot--andneverwillbe--atwarwithIslam.I'vemadeclear,justasPresidentBushdidshortlyafter9/11,thatourwarisnotagainstIslam.BinLadenwasnotaMuslimleader;hewasamassmurdererofMuslims.Indeed,Al-QaedahasslaughteredscoresofMuslimsinmanycountries,includingourown.Sohisdemiseshouldbewelcomedbyallwhobelieveinpeaceandhumandignity.
Overtheyears,I'verepeatedlymadeclearthatwewouldtakeactionwithinPakistanifweknewwherebinLadenwas.Thatiswhatwe'vedone.Butit'simportanttonotethatourcounterterrorismcooperationwithPakistanhelpedleadustobinLadenandthecompoundwherehewashiding.Indeed,binLadenhaddeclaredwaragainstPakistanaswell,andorderedattacksagainstthePakistanipeople.
Tonight,IcalledPresidentZardari,andmyteamhasalsospokenwiththeirPakistanicounterparts.Theyagreethatthisisagoodandhistoricdayforbothofournations.Andgoingforward,itisessentialthatPakistancontinuetojoinusinthefightagainstalQaedaanditsaffiliates.
TheAmericanpeopledidnotchoosethisfight.Itcametoourshores,andstartedwiththesenselessslaughterofourcitizens.Afternearly10yearsofservice,struggle,andsacrifice,weknowwellthecostsofwar.TheseeffortsweighonmeeverytimeI,asCommander-in-Chief,havetosignalettertoafamilythathaslostalovedone,orlookintotheeyesofaservicememberwho'sbeengravelywounded.
SoAmericansunderstandthecostsofwar.Yetasacountry,wewillnevertolerateoursecuritybeingthreatened,norstandidlybywhenourpeoplehavebeenkilled.Wewillberelentlessindefenseofourcitizensandourfriendsandallies.Wewillbetruetothevaluesthatmakeuswhoweare.Andonnightslikethisone,wecansaytothosefamilieswhohavelostlovedonestoAl-Qaeda'sterror:Justicehasbeendone.
Tonight,wegivethankstothecountlessintelligenceandcounterterrorismprofessionalswho'veworkedtirelesslytoachievethisoutcome.TheAmericanpeopledonotseetheirwork,norknowtheirnames.Buttonight,theyfeelthesatisfactionoftheirworkandtheresultoftheirpursuitofjustice.
Wegivethanksforthemenwhocarriedoutthisoperation,fortheyexemplifytheprofessionalism,patriotism,andunparalleledcourageofthosewhoserveourcountry.AndtheyarepartofagenerationthathasbornetheheaviestshareoftheburdensincethatSeptemberday.
Finally,letmesaytothefamilieswholostlovedoneson9/11thatwehaveneverforgottenyourloss,norwaveredinourcommitmenttoseethatwedowhateverittakestopreventanotherattackonourshores.
Andtonight,letusthinkbacktothesenseofunitythatprevailedon9/11.Iknowthatithas,attimes,frayed.Yettoday'sachievementisatestamenttothegreatnessofourcountryandthedeterminationoftheAmericanpeople.
Thecauseofsecuringourcountryisnotcomplete.Buttonight,weareonceagainremindedthatAmericacandowhateverwesetourmindto.Thatisthestoryofourhistory,whetherit'sthepursuitofprosperityforourpeople,orthestruggleforequalityforallourcitizens;ourcommitmenttostandupforourvaluesabroad,andoursacrificestomaketheworldasaferplace.
Letusrememberthatwecandothesethingsnotjustbecauseofwealthorpower,butbecauseofwhoweare:onenation,underGod,indivisible,withlibertyandjusticeforall.
