CompletelysurroundedbyJapanesesoldiers,theChineseheldthegodownforfourdays.Then,leavingtheirdeadbehind,theyswamacrossthecreek,carryingtheirwounded,muchtothechagrinoftheJapanese.
一九三七年，中日軍隊正在上海交鋒。這是一場沒有宣布的戰爭。蔣介石精銳的八十八師堅守閘北七十五天，然後撤退，但還留下五百人左右，據守隔蘇州河和國際租界相對的四行倉庫。指揮官拒絕了英國人讓他們退入租界的建議，說沒有命令，不能撤退。
這支中國軍隊被日軍四面包圍，固守四行倉庫四天，這才遺下死者，帶着傷者，泅水橫渡蘇州河而去，令日軍大為氣憤。＊
＊當年所謂「八百壯士孤軍」，其實只有官兵四百五十二人。一九四一年四月，孤軍指揮官謝晉元遭「民族稟性崇高」的日本人買兇刺殺。
