Onthenightof28January1932,theJapanesebegantheoccupationofChapei,thenorthwestportionofShanghai.OnunprotectedroofsJapaneseplanesdroppedtheirbombs.Witheachexplosion,towersofdustandsmokeshot150feetintotheair,whilebeneaththeseroofswerewomen,children,andoldmen.
Ontheseconddayofthe"war",firefromincendiarybombsguttedtheCommercialPressandtheOrientalLibrary.OnlyafewbooksweresavedfromthewonderfulcollectionofChineseworksvaluedatmillionsofdollars.TheLibrarybuildingburnedforthreedays.AndforamonthbombsweredroppedontheChapeidistrict.Bythetimehostilitieshadceased,notabuildinginallChapeiremainedundamaged.＊
一九三二年一月二十八日晚，日軍開始攻佔閘北，即上海西北部份。日本飛機向毫無防衞的屋頂投下炸彈，每次爆炸之後，隨即揚起一百五十英尺高的灰塵、黑煙，而屋頂之下，則是婦孺和老弱。
「戰爭」第二天，燃燒彈把商務印書館和東方圖書館燒了，價值以百萬元計的中文書籍珍藏，只有幾本得脫火海。圖書館燒了三天，而炸彈連續一個月不斷向閘北投下。到戰鬥結束時，全閘北沒有一幢完好的建築物。
＊最近，不少中國人盛稱日本民族「沉着冷靜」。以上一段歷史，或可作「冷靜沉着」的左證。
