"Irodeslowlyalongthemarchingbattalions.Iheardtheregularsoundofanenginefromahouseontheroad.Asteamsawwascuttingrhythmicallythroughwood.Seeingtheyardinfrontofthehousepiledhighwithwoodencrossesandthinkingtosparethemen,Ihurriedintohavethemremoved.TheBelgiansengagedintheworkthrewuptheirhandsindespair,andpointedthroughthewindowtothebackofthehouseandanevenbiggerpile.Nothingcouldbedone.Iwatchedthemenastheypassedby.Somesmiled,otherspassedajoke,somewouldn'tlook.ButIknewthattheyallsawandunderstood."
